This experience invites you into the operator’s seat of our 147-year-old legacy. You won’t start with a lecture; you’ll start by feeling the weight of the earth as you handle an excavator for the first time. We’ve designed this for the “modern-curious” soul who wants to trade the digital world for the tactile reality of heavy machinery and homesteading. It’s a chance to learn the specific, gritty nuances of a working farm, graduating toward a deeper understanding of what it takes to keep a legacy alive.

Curriculum:

Session 1: The Precision Cut (The Nuance) We dive straight into the most delicate part of the job: precision excavation. You’ll take the controls of the excavator to dig a trench for a mock utility line. This session is all about “feel”—learning how the machine responds to your touch and how to navigate the pressure of working near existing farm infrastructure.

Session 2: The Mechanical Heart (The Systems) Now that you’ve felt the power, we look under the hood. Following our focus on practical trades, this session covers the “why” of our equipment. We’ll dive into hydraulic systems, farm truck maintenance, and the vital skill of maneuvering heavy trailers. You’ll learn that a master operator is also a master mechanic.

Session 3: The Gift of the Land (The Fundamentals) We bring it all together by returning to the basics that have sustained this farm for over a century. You’ll apply your machine skills to the fundamental tasks of fencing, land grading, and manure management. You’ll see how heavy machines serve the simple, enduring needs of the soil.

Bonus Session: The Master of Flow (Homestead Resilience) We move from the field to the farmhouse for a specialized session in residential infrastructure. We cover the specific nuances of plumbing, including toilet and sink repair. This ensures you are as capable under a sink as you are in an excavator cab—the ultimate badge of homestead self-reliance.

As multi-generational farmers in Lehi, Utah, they have spent their lives proving that “animals and the land can do things for the soul.” Your instructors are seasoned operators who view farming as a blend of mechanical engineering and a deep connection to the earth. They don’t just teach you how to use a tool; they teach you how to respect the legacy it builds. Their mission is to bridge the gap between the modern world and the enduring spirit of the American homestead through Animal Science and practical trades.

Come Prepared With

• Please wear rugged, closed-toe work boots (steel toe preferred) and durable long pants. Bring a reusable water bottle and high-SPF sunscreen. Because this is a working farm with active livestock, we kindly ask that you leave all pets at home.

Provided For You

• We provide all necessary safety gear, including hard hats, high-visibility vests, and professional-grade work gloves. During our mid-session breaks, locally sourced snacks and refreshments from the Lehi area will be provided to keep your energy levels high for the heavy work.

About The Setting

Located in the heart of Lehi, Cox Farm & Ranch is a verdant escape from the surrounding tech corridor. Upon arrival, follow the signs for “Experience Parking” near the main barn. Please drive slowly (5 mph) to protect our free-roaming animals. The terrain is authentic—expect dirt, some mud, and uneven ground as you navigate between the machinery bays and the historic pastures of this 147-year-old homestead.
