The Molten Moment: Master-Apprentice Dual Casting

Austin, TX 78701, USA

An Exclusive Maker Experience by Comprendate

Step away from the textbook and into the heat of the forge. At Comprendate, we believe the most profound way to learn is by doing the “impossible” first. Led by Greg Wenderski, a former science teacher and historian, this experience invites you to master the high-stakes art of casting before diving into the theory. You won’t spend hours in a lecture hall; instead, you’ll begin your journey at the crucible, feeling the radiant heat as you and a partner manage a professional-grade molten pour. It’s a tactile exploration of physics and history that prioritizes the “moment of truth” to build immediate confidence. Whether you’re a lifelong maker or a curious novice, you’ll find that the science of the past is best understood when it’s glowing in your hands.

Curriculum:

Session 1: The Alchemy of the Pour. We start where most courses end: the furnace. Under Greg’s expert guidance, you’ll dive straight into the specific nuance of a dual-person pour. You will learn to read the metal’s temperature by its color and manage the high-stakes physics of filling a mold. By starting with the most challenging skill, you gain an immediate, visceral connection to the material.

Session 2: The Art of the Edge. With your raw casting in hand, we move to the precision of the finish. This session focuses on the ergonomics of the hilt and the geometry of the blade. You’ll spend the session grinding, polishing, and wrapping the handle in leather, seeing your “result” transform into a work of art. This hands-on refinement reinforces the lessons of Session 1 through tactile feedback.

Session 3: The Maker’s Foundation. Now that you’ve successfully cast and finished a sword, we go back to the “Why.” We explore the evolution of human tool-making and the chemistry of metallurgy. You’ll learn to build your own sand molds from scratch—a task that feels intuitive now that you’ve already mastered the outcome. We conclude with a deep dive into the archaeology that makes these designs legendary.

The Foundation

Comprendate connects curious guests with passionate experts like the Sword Casting Guy to offer a “results-forward” approach to learning. Traditional education often front-loads theory, which can stifle curiosity; our process identifies the most exciting, “peak” moment of a craft and makes it your starting point. By whitelabeling these sessions, we ensure a structured path where the most complex skills are tackled while your energy is highest. We believe that once you’ve experienced the “win” of a successful casting, the underlying science and history become an origin story you’re eager to hear. This is learning designed for the modern maker: immersive, empowering, and deeply human.

Meet Your Host

Greg Wenderski is a tinkerer, metal artist, and former science teacher who has turned his passion for history into a traveling industrial lab. Known for his “amazing energy and passion,” Greg specializes in making complex subjects like metallurgy and physics feel like an adventure. He has a rare gift for “giving students plenty of leeway to experience the process” while ensuring total safety. Greg has taught thousands—from young children to corporate teams—proving that with the right coach, anyone can master the ancient art of the sword. His goal isn’t just to help you make a tool, but to help you see the world through the eyes of an ancient maker.

Come Prepared With

  • Safety is our first priority. Please wear natural fibers (100% cotton jeans and a long-sleeved shirt); synthetic materials are not permitted near the furnace. You must wear closed-toe leather shoes or boots. Bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated, and perhaps a notebook if you want to jot down Greg’s historical anecdotes.

Provided For You

  • The Sword Casting Guy provides all necessary safety equipment, including professional-grade face shields, heat-resistant aprons, and gloves. All raw metals (aluminum or bronze), sand-casting materials, and leather for the hilt are included in your session fee. You’ll have full use of professional grinding and polishing tools under Greg’s supervision.

About The Setting

Our classes are held at our Austin-based Industrial Lab at 807 Rio Grande St. This “Pop-up” environment brings the grit and excitement of a working foundry to the heart of the city. As noted by past hosts, Greg brings a certain “magic” to the space, turning a simple lot into a high-energy hub of creativity. The setting is rugged, authentic, and perfectly suited for the heat of the forge, offering an immersive escape from the everyday world into the fires of the Bronze Age.
